Polyhedral Oliogomeric Silsesquioxane or POSS~(TM) nanotechnology is a revolutionary new technology based on Nanostructured?Chemicals. POSS~(TM) nanotechnology emerged from the desire to control the physical properties of materials at the molecular level with the purpose of realizing radical enhancement of physical properties and the creation of high performance polymer systems. Nanostructured~(TM) Chemicals can be incorporated into materials using any one of three different methods: compounding, polymerization/grafting, or coatings for surface modification. When incorporated into polymers they provide nanocomposite properties while maintaining processability and optical properties. The production methods and physical properties for the first commercial and affordable class of Nanostructured~(TM) Chemicals known as Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes will be described. POSS~(TM)-reagents, and monomers can be copolymerized with common organic co-monomers or they can be reactively grafted directly on to polymer chains. Alternately non-reactive POSS systems referred to as Molecular Silicas~(TM) can be melt or solution compounded into plastics to produce nanocomposites with improved heat distortion and mechanical properties.
