Blood transfusion is in indispensable means in the modern clinic. However, complex irnmunologic response is involved in the process; and transfusion-associated transmissible diseases constitute great concern to the recipients; Besides , the strict condition under which blood is stored and transported is a limit to transfusion in Casualty and battle salvation. Thus, research and development of ideal artificial blood―RBC and platelet substitute has been a long-persuited major subject. This reviewing more than 300 references cited in 5 books on RBC substites, and covering the achievements in the basic research, the large-scale production and the clinical trials in the past 70 years, gives and outline of the characteristic , accomplishment, difficulty and research foucus of various preparations, in order to have a brief description of the status of RBC substitutes.
