In this work the results are presented of the investigation of the soil shear strength inrnthe direct shear test taking into consideration the increase normal stresses. The investigationrnwas conducted in the laboratory test with the use of the standard and modified direct shearrnapparatus. The conventional soil shearing for the constant maximal normal loads of 20, 40, 70,rn100 and 130 kPa was carried out, similarly to those occurring under the low pressure tyres. Thernmodified shear test was carried out with increasing the normal stress from zero to its variousrnanalysed maximal values s, amounting to 20, 40, 70, 100 and 130 kPa. The growth of thernnormal stress was performed during the horizontal soil displacement j in the shear box till thernassumed constant values amounted to: 5, 10 and 20 mm, imitating various slips under tyres.rnThe investigation concerned shearing of the loosened sandy soil in the range of humidity from 4rnto 15 % weight.rnFrom both tests the dependencies of the shear stress t on the soil displacement j for the variousrnnormal stresses s were obtained, and on the basis of these results the soil shear strengthrnparameters: cohesion c, soil friction angle j and shear deformation modulus K, wererndetermined. In the comparative analysis of both measurement methods it was found that thernway of the application of normal load during the direct shear test has a substantial effect on thernresults of the soil shear strength. The values of the stages and maximal shear stresses t in thernanalysed loosened light soil obtained during the modified test were significantly different fromrnthose obtained in the conventional test. This effect depends on the tested maximal values of thernnormal stresses, on the soil humidity and on the length of the assumed soil displacement whenrnthe increase of the normal load was applied.rnIt is examined that the analysed theoretical model of the dependence of the shear stress t onrnthe soil displacement j, including the strength parameter assessed on the basis of the resultsrnobtained using the modified method, is approximately similar to the investigation results.
