The use of ball bearings in the space industry isrncommonplace, with a broad range of applications fromrnthe most precise pointing mechanisms to extreme longrn-life and performance-demanding reaction wheels andrnsimpler single-shot devices where precision,rnperformance and life may be less difficult to achieve.rnThough most application developments are ultimatelyrnsuccessful, the lessons learned from the incorrectrnimplementation of ball bearings are, usually forrnunderstandable commercial reasons, not widelyrndistributed – but often extremely valuable for industry.rnThe organizations contributing to this paper have anrnunprecedentedly clear view of numerous spacecraftrnapplications, both successful and otherwise, togetherrnwith many years of experience in design, handling,rnlubricating, preloading and testing ball bearings forrnspace applications.rnIn order to help the space community to avoid designrnor handling errors in future, ESA has mandated bearingrnmanufacturer ADR, and the European Space TribologyrnLaboratory (ESTL) to create a useful guideline whichrnsummarises both best practice and a distillation of thernlessons learned from many programs.rnThis paper presents a selection of the more valuablernand generally applicable lessons learned by thesernorganizations in the last 30-40 years together with anrnoverview of the recently published guideline documentrnitself [1] which embodies this experience and containsrnrecommendations concerning ball bearing selection,rndesign and conceptual rules and recommendations forrnassembly, preloading and verification testing.rnThe novelty of this paper comes from the broad rangernof experiences and applications, both good and bad thatrnthe organisations concerned have observed and thernpublication (for the first time) of guidelines for use byrnthe space mechanisms community in Europe.
