Precast segmental technology allows a fast and a very efficient construction of bridges. Bridges with spans up to 40 m are usually erected span-by-span. The segments are assembled on the erection truss and are post-tensioned by external tendons anchored in pier segments - see Figs.1a and 2a. Bridges of larger spans are usually erected in balance cantilevers that start above the piers; during the erection the segments are post-tensioned by internal cantilever tendons -see Fig.1b1. After casting the mid-span joint continuity external tendons are post-tensioned- see Figs. 1b2 and 2b. A box girder with overhangs usually forms the deck of segmental structures;. the deck seldom has a double tee or channel section.
