摘要

The successful commercialization of Electric and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (EVs and HEVs) can reduce thernUnited States’ growing dependence on petroleum fuels for transportation; decrease polluting and greenhouserngas emissions from vehicles; and facilitate a long-term transition to sustainable renewable energy sources. ThernU. S. Department of Energy (DOE) supports, through its Office of Advanced Automotive Technologiesrn(OAAT), innovative research to develop advanced energy storage and power electronics technologies, fuelrncells, advanced direct-injection engines, vehicle systems, lightweight materials, and fuels for transportationrnapplications. These R&D activities are conducted in partnership with DOE’s national laboratories, industry, rnother government agencies, universities, and small businesses. This paper summarizes the status of tworncollaborative R&D programs with the U.S. Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) to develop high-energyrnbatteries for EVs and high-power batteries for HEVs. The Batteries for Advanced TransportationrnTechnologies (BATT) program, a component of the high-energy batteries program, is designed to satisfy arncontinuing need to investigate new electrochemistry that offers the potential for improvements in advancedrnbatteries. The Advanced Technology Development (ATD) Program, a component of the high power batteriesrnprogram, addresses barriers for high-power lithium-ion batteries in the areas of calendar life, abuse tolerance, rnand cost. This paper summarizes the progress of each R&D project toward improving the performance ofrnbattery components and materials and the development of new and improved analytical and experimentalrnmethods to characterize and monitor the performance of battery components. It summarizes the technologyrnobjectives, technical barriers and approach for overcoming those barriers and includes a progress report onrnaccomplishments, current status of program activities, and future plans.
