This paper describes a study that evaluates the feasibility of making use of traffic probe datafor the environmental measure of vehicle carbon dioxide emissions by an estimation model.The probe data is compressed in the onboard units according to a preset compression ratioand sent to an urban traffic control center via the beacons. We installed onboard units on fourprobe vehicles, which are different from each other in vehicle type, displacement and load.The experiments were conducted on the arterial roads around the center of Yokohama City.The estimated consumption was compared to the measured value. The results show that theaccuracy of estimation heavily depends on the data compression ratio, displacement, andload. Four types of data compression ratios were tested in the experiments: low, lowermiddle, upper middle, and high. It was found that the model could be successfully applied forestimation if the compression ratio was low or lower middle, and the vehicle is a passengercar or a van without load and of 2,000cc displacement.
