Is there a way of increasing road tunnel safety by using an alternative sensor technology?As today's prevalent road traffic tunnel supervision systems suffer from major drawbacks indetecting traffic in difficult light conditions, Saab has tested and evaluated new advancedradar technology as a complementary or potentially an alternative sensor technology fordetecting ghost drivers and stopped vehicles in road tunnels. The tests have been a greatsuccess so far, where it can be proven that advanced radar technology has at least equalperformance as state of the art CCTV/VCA systems performing under ideal light conditionsand outperforms camera technology in more difficult lighting scenarios. As road traffic tunnelsafety scenarios create some challenging problems to overcome, new detection algorithmshave been developed solving these issues. Suggestions on how to implement this newtechnology are given as well as sketching a totally new road tunnel safety concept. Acost/benefit analysis has been made showing that radar technology has a positive ratiocompared with existing CCTV/VCA systems.
