The usage rate of the ETC has exceeded 80% since Japanese first ETC system was operatedtentatively in Chiba and Okinawa in March, 2000. On the other hand, we are facing issuesabout deterioration and obsolescence of ETC facilities. NEXCO-EAST (East NipponExpressway Company) has newly introduced the Next-Generation-Style (2G-Style) ETCsystem into 7 tollgates/ 17 lanes in Hokkaido in 2009. Moreover, we have replaced 15tollgates/ 62 lanes managed by Kanto Reagional Branch with 2G-Style ETC system in 2010.This paper shows our new and unique actions to improve system reliability and maintenancequality for the introduction of the 2G-Style ETC system.We are going to keep inspecting and evaluating the working condition of the system and themaintenance work, and we will keep improving reliability of ETC equipments utilizing our 11years experience operating ETC.
