The memory-enhancing peptide, AVP(4-8), existing in mammalian brain as a metabolite of arginine vasopressin (AVP), facilitates the short-term and long-term learnign and memory of animals. Significant acceleration of phosphorylated growth-associated protein (GAP43) maturation by AVP(4-8) [1] may be functionally involved in synaptic plasticity, axonelongation and long-term potetiation (LTP) [2]. Calmodulin (CaM) is a ubiquitous intracellular calcium receptor which can be released from CaM-binding proteins, such as GAP43 and MARCKS when they are phosphorylated by protein kinase C(PKC) [3]. CaM is responsible for activating more than 20 enzymes [4], among them Ca~2+/CaM-dependent auto-phosphorylation, CaMKII displays its protein kinase activity by switching the molecule into an "on" state. It has been found that LTP can be promptly induced by AVP(4-8) in rat hippocampual slices, but the process of LTP may not be necessarily related to the activation of NMDA receptor. So it is interesting to observe the changes of effctive CaM level and CaMKII activity in rat train when the animals are administered with AVP(4-8).
