摘要

As social network service has become more common, new forms of organizing, such as online groups, havernemerged. However, many of online communities fail to provide significant value to retain and attractrnparticipants. Drawing from prior studies of traditional social structures Internet-based groups, thisrnexploratory work considers how the role of community resources effect the sustainability of online socialrncommunities. In this work, a resource-based theory of sustainable social structures is presented. Membersrncontribute time, energy, and other resources, enabling a social community to provide benefits for individuals.rnThese resources, which include information, influence, and social support, are the foundation for a socialrncommunity’s ability to attract and retain members. As such, we propose that community resources (i.e.,rnstructural factors, demographic diversities, and communication activity) support the ability of attracting andrnretaining members, thereby influencing community sustainability. The research model is supported by datarncollected from QQ groups from Tencent, which is one of the largest Internet-based social network services inrnChina. Descriptive statistical analyses of data from a random sample of QQ groups indicate that communityrnresources always have both positive and negative effects on a structure’s sustainability. Overall, our findingsrnimplicit that developing and maintaining sustainable online social structures requires that the fundamentalrnproblem of balancing these positive and negative impacts of these resource factors be solved in order tornprovide benefits for the members in the present while attracting more potential members for the future.
