A testing program is being performed by Angeles Crest Engineering Inc (ACEI) to evaluate the compatibility of materials with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide. Decomposition of hydrogen peroxide occurs predominately by heterogenous catalysis at surfaces of materials which it contacts. A parameter needed to design systems that use concentrated hydrogen peroxide is the rate of oxygen evolution per unit area of surface in contact with hydrogen peroxide and the temperature dependence of this parameter.rnA testing procedure and analysis method have been developed to quantitatively characterize the decomposition rate of hydrogen peroxide in contact with different materials as a function of temperature. This methodology is used to provide the information needed to allow resolution of component design and fabrication issues. ACEI has performed about four hundred seventy immersion tests with several different materials to evaluate compatibility with hydrogen peroxide of 70% and 90% concentration by weight. .rnThe gas evolution technique is used to characterize the decomposition rate of hydrogen peroxide in contact with an immersed material. Gas evolution data are collected at three different temperatures from several test specimens of each material. The data are used to calculate temperature dependence of active oxygen loss and reaction rate constant for hydrogen peroxide in contact with a material.rnThe test procedures and analysis methods are discussed, and example results are presented.
