Hydrogen peroxide(H_2O_2)/kerosene is a prospective bipropellant due to its high energy content, high storage density and environmentally benign properties. As emphasis is being placed on the developing of green propellants in recent years, H_2O_2/kerosene has been regarded as the most promising alternative for replacing those toxic propellants presently in use. The possibility of making it hypergolic made this option even more attracting. In this paper we present approaches for acquiring self-ignitable H_2O_2/kerosene bipropellants and their propulsive performances on a specially designed thrust engine. Combinations of different candidate catalysts and promoters were prepared and tested using a dropping-test method, and then the combinations with satisfactory dropping-test performances were evaluated on thrust engine. The characteristics of the firing tests illustrate that kerosene with additives and high concentration hydrogen peroxide showed a short ignition delay in both steady state and pulse-mode operations. It is expected that the combination of hydrogen peroxide and kerosene can be an effective replacement for storable propellants being used currently.
