In order to develop a new kind of medical implant material, the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of Ti-Si cast alloys prepared by dental casting machine have been studied. The results show that silicon addition significantly modified the microstructure of the titanium alloys. In addition, Ti-Si alloys show a good combination of strength and ductility in a wide range of silicon content in contrast to the pure titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy. A dense and uniform bonelike apatite layer is formed on the surface of substrate of the Ti-Si alloy soaked in simulated body fluid for 4 weeks. The apatite-forming ability is higher than that of pure titanium. The in vitro cytotoxicity of Ti-Si alloy is also assessed in a HepG2 cell assay. Ti-Si alloy exhibits the same cytocompatibility with pure titanium after testing the HepG2 cells cultured with the extraction of Ti-Si alloy. It has been revealed that Ti-Si cast alloys can be expected as promising candidates for dental application because of a good balance between mechanical properties and biocompatibility.
