Argonne National Laboratory and Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) have recently completed a study that evaluated the feasibility of using a hot isostatic press to immobilize radioactive waste in ceramic and glass/ceramic matrices. A number of different metal canister designs were tested in this study. This paper reviews the relative advantages and disadvantages of straight walled, convoluted, and specially-designed canisters. It also looks at process optimization of the temperature/pressure cycle and the effect it had on the final shape of the material being consolidated.
