Since the early 1990’s the operation of seawater desalination units on the isolated islands ofrnthe Torres Strait, between the tip of Australia and Papua New Guinea, has been undergoingrnan evolution in the operation and maintenance of existing plants and the design of newrnplants. Whilst not targeted the evolution can best be described as the application of thernPareto principle or “80-20 rule” which infers that for many events, 80% of the effects comernfrom 20% of the causes. In the context of small scale desalination the implied meaning isrnthat by utilising a simple, manual desalination system which requires a small amount ofrnoperator input the system performance achieved can be at least 80% of that expected from arnhighly monitored and managed system.
