Algorithms and Programming is one of the compulsory subjects of the Degree in Computing in the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Central de Venezuela. The contribution of the content learned in the subject and the need for its meaningful learning is fundamental, since it initiates the student in the construction of algorithms and programs, improving their capacity of abstraction, understanding of problems and structuring of solutions. These are very important information processing mechanisms for a computer scientist. However, it is one of the five subjects with the highest failure rate in the degree, motivation to identify cognitive and motivational difficulties, involving students who were enrolled in the period 2004-2015. Expected skills or competences in the students who will leave the subject were defined, taking into account aspects learned in teacher training activities, guidelines of curriculum commissions and international references organizations in Computer Science training. Teaching, learning, problem solving and motivation strategies were also identified, with the aim of helping the student overcome the difficulties detected and guide the teaching group in their educational practice. The results are summarized in the definition of competences, strategies and techniques that are considered relevant for students to develop skills that allow them to constantly acquire knowledge, analyze and construct solutions to problems of different levels of complexity, communication of solutions in different contexts and interacting with different users. In the quantitative results, was observed an improvement in the overall grade point average of the approved students and the rate of withdrawals (retired) decreased, but did not improve the approved rate.
