Satellite monitoring of vegetation change is conducted in the hyper-arid area of the Eastern Desert of Egypt Perennial vegetation grows in wadis and in other landfonns where run-on water conditions prevail Arboreal vegetation, which is subject to change, is, however, very sparse (less than 4 trees/ha). Four different datasets are part of the change analysis: 1973, 1979, 1984 (all Landsat MSS images) and 1996 (TM). The change analysis is based on a subtraction between Red bands. A subsequent classification into two broad classes; increase and decrease, gives a total of eight trends across periods. These cross-periodic trends are interpreted according to field-data and meteorological trends. Although several sources of errors introduce variations in the change analysis, the results do reflect the field observations.
