Project managers require methodologies to help them in improving processes. Six Sigma is one of those methodologies that lately are being used extensively. Adaptations of Six Sigma concept are many and it is a methodology that has been evolving on the last decade. This evolution goes from the DMAI (Define-Measure-Analysis-Improve phases) to the R-DMAIC-R (Recognize-Define, Measure, Analysis, Improve, Control-Review phases); from manufacturing (DMAIC) to support areas (DMAIE) such as maintenance or inventory. Manufacturing processes are measured and controlled as part of the normal management procedure. On the other hand, support areas in most cases, often are ignored by management.rnThe objective for this paper is to address integrating tools, from management and systems thinking, to the DMAIE methodology so non-manufacturing projects gain support and take advantage of the methodological foundation of Six Sigma. A table with some helpful tools and a suggested order of integration as a function of four typical transactional six sigma projects is provided.
