Determining the Impact of Alternative Work Schedules on Energy Consumption

As public and private organizations, as well as society in general, straggle with rising energy costs, many energy conservation strategies are being considered. Alternative work schedules have been implemented by some organizations, and are under consideration by many others. Although the human factors impacts of alternative work schedules have received significant attention, much less research has directly addressed the energy consumption effects. Changes in work schedules lead to numerous intended and unintended consequences that are often difficult to foresee, plan for, or analyze.rnTo construct a model that simulates the energy consumption impacts of alternative work schedules, there are several systems analysis and design problems that must be addressed. Many interconnected and dependent factors must be considered when developing a model that can compare and contrast estimates of energy consumption under specified work schedule conditions. For example, variables that may be important include commute distance, commute time, transportation mode (including fuel efficiency), fuel prices, employment type, number of people employed at a specific location, non-work travel behavior, etc. Prior research has touched on energy issues with respect to work schedules, but detailed studies in this area seem to be non-existent.rnThe objectives of this study are to review previous work on energy consumption effects of alternative work schedules, and to identify the factors necessary for building a basic framework for modeling the energy usage of defined systems with the specific future purpose of comparing a standard workweek with potential energy saving alternative work schedules.
