It is important for ergonomists working on problems of manual handling and other physical tasks to have a sound understanding of engineering mechanics. This workshop aims to develop and enhance this understanding. General principles, including measurement units, characteristics of force, equilibrium, free-body diagrams, positions of centres of gravity, sliding friction, rolling friction, forces required to push or pull loads up ramps, bumps and steps, leverage in hand tools, dynamic effects in lifting, and stability against tipping are covered, and real examples provided.
