Inco conducted preliminary testing of continuous converting of solid flash furnace bulk copper-nickel matte at its Port Colborne pilot plant in the early 1990s. Two routes were investigated, namely oxygen flash converting and oxygen top blowing-nitrogen bottom stirring. However, due to time constraints, some questions relating to the metallurgy of continuous converting remained unanswered. In 2000, the signing of an Inco-Codelco technology cooperation agreement opened the door to further investigation of these issues at Codelco's Teniente Converter miniplant facility, located adjacent to the Chuquicamata Smelter in Chile. This miniplant is equipped with a four-tuyere, cylindrical, horizontal, tilting vessel, 2.12 m long by 59 cm in diameter (inside dimensions), that can be operated with up to 50 vol% oxygen enriched air. Two continuous converting campaigns were carried out, one in October-November 2000 and the second in March-April 2001, using granulated copper-nickel matte supplied by Inco. This paper describes Codelco's miniplant and the test work operating methodology, and discusses the technical viability of the continuous converting of copper-nickel mattes.
