The most prominent feature of the Congress Centre of Lucerne is an almost quadratic roof of 112.7 m x 107.2 m with very large cantilevering portions. The roof is instrumented in order to monitor its full-scale performance and, in particular, the fatigue safety of the steel structure. The monitoring system computes and stores the maximum and minimum values of the measured quantities every 2 hours and plots their time histories every month. Moreover, when the wind speed exceeds 80 km/h, an event is recorded in detail for a duration of 300 s. During the Lothar storm of 25 to 27 December 1999, 12 events were recorded and the highest wind speed was 112.8 km/h. The maximum stress amplitudes measured during the storm were less than 20% of the design values estimated on the basis of the wind tunnel tests.
