This paper summarizes the research and publication output of South African scientists from the areas of natural and physical sciences for the period of 1990-2003. The data is collected from the Science Citation Index of the Institute of Scientific Information. Four Scientometric indicators are applied to the South African (SA) publication activity and citation impact for the period 1990-2003, covering the five scientific disciplines chosen for this research. The result showed that there is a decrease in the total numbers of publications when compared to the rest of the world. At the same time the number of citations has increased at a higher rate when compared to the rest of the world. We look into the reasons and explanation behind this.
