The optimal placement of control actuators for large space structures is considered. A numerical algorithm for determining the optimal placement of actuators is developed that determines the optimal state feedback control law based on a selected H_2 cost functional. The minimization of an additional cost functional with respect to the actuator locations is performed using a genetic algorithm guided search of ordered sets, which represent the degrees of freedom controlled by the actuators. The "optimal" placement of actuators is performed with respect to different cost measures. The effect of different cost measures is studied using a demonstrative problem of a 36-element truss structure. The numerical algorithm is then implemented successfully on a large structure with 208 elements.
