In the first of a two part research study to understand the effects of cable material components on large-scale Steiner Tunnel test performance, twisted, 4-pair copper communications cables and respective cable jackets were evaluated for fire and smoke performance by ASTM El354 cone calorimeter. Data analysis indicates that inherent cable material properties (heat of combustion and smoke extinctional cross-sectional area) measured by small-scale cone calorimeter can be used as predictors for compliance to large-scale Steiner Tunnel test requirements set forth in NFPA 90A. Materials under study encompassed a broad range of tunnel fire and smoke performance.
