Feeding trials were conducted in 4 × 4 Latin square design to examine the effect of level of pelleted silvergrass feed (PSF) in the diets on chewing time, rumen fermentation and nutritional status in breeding Japanese Black cows.The dietary treatments were 1) 89.4% (on a dry matter basis) Sudangrass hay (SH) diet, 2) 71.5% SH and 17.9% PSF diet, 3) 62.5% SH and 26.9% PSF diet and 4) 44.7% SH and 44.8% PSF diet.Dry matter (DM) intake was not significantly different among the treatments.The chewing time (min kgDM intake-1) was decreased by increasing the PSF level in the diets.But the PSF level did not change the rumen fermentation and serum metabolites compositions.These results suggest that including PSF at 45% (on a DM basis) in the diets do not have adverse effects on the rumen fermentation and nutritional status in breeding Japanese Black cows at maintenance stage.
