Due to economic and environmental concerns, there is an increasing demand for the efficient use of crop residues, including corn stover.Increased production costs in particular have forced commercial cattle and sheep producers to minimize costs wherever possible.The objective of this study was to ascertain the feasibility of adding water to the dry feed materials to prepare a fermented TMR by determining the effects of fermented or fresh TMR containing dry corn stover and Chinese wildrye on its digestion, rumen fermentation, and nitrogen retention in sheep.Forty-eight male Ujumqin sheep (a local breed) with initial body weight (BW) of 24 ± 1.1 kg were randomly assigned to one of eight treatments for 62 d feeding period.Experimental treatments were fresh TMR and fermented TMR containing Chinese wildrye, 10, 30 and 50-mm corn stover, respectively.Each TMR contained ground corn grain, Soybean meal, a compound feed, Chinese wildrye or chopped corn sotver in a ratio of 200:80:120:600, respectively, on a dry matter basis.
