The farming system is operating in an environment specific to the locality. In this situation it is imperative that the technology should be adaptive to the tocality. It is possible to assess the location specificity of the technology only when the persons having knowledge of the locality is involved. This participatory technology development was undertaken to evolve location specific technology in NPKRR Cooperative sugar mills at Tamil Nadu for varietal identification. sandy soil management and ratoon management. Person to person communication gave advantages of instantaneous technology transfer due to the interaction of location specific messages and experiences. The experiment on participatory technology transfer was undertaken in MRK Cooperative sugar mill for managing red rot disease in the area and introduce new sugarcane variety Co 86032. This paper provides theoretical and applied perspectives related to participatory approach in technology development and technology transfer as applicable to Indian sugarcane farming.
