Pseudomonas aerginosa causes seious infections especially in immuno-compromised host, through dissemination in hospitals. For. P. aeruginosa infections, carbapenms as well as piperacillin and third-generation cephems are potent beta-lactam antibiotics, but these beta-lactams are easily hydrolyzed by the carbapenemase produced by P. aeruginosa strains. The enzyme is a metallo-beta-lactamase with broad substrate spectrum, which extends to most beta-lactam antibiotics, except for monobactams. It was first identified in a P. aeruginosa strain and mediated by a plasmid pMS350 (1). Later, hospital infections caused by carbapenemase-producing P. aeruginosa have been reported (2).
