Billions of dollars and millions of man-hours have been invested in incorporating MST and Nanotechnology into the world's optical telecom and datacom networks. Advanced optical sources, sensors, actuators, and packages have been developed - with applications in transmission lasers, optical amplification, optical switching, optical transport, and optical computing. These advances include MEMS optical devices like Reconfigurable Optical Add/Drop Multiplexers (ROADMs), and nanoscale photonic bandgap materials like PBG optical fiber, etc.rnMany MST and nanotech companies have developed novel technologies but only a handful of firms will survive over the next few years as viable suppliers of commercial products in the recovering communications market.rnThis session looks at the commercial successes and failures of MST and nanophotonics firms who have targeted optical telecom and the likely survivors and growth markets in the coming years. Case studies are examined, markets are sized, and revenue is analyzed. Successful business strategies for commercialization of MST products are explored and the role of venture capital investment is discussed. This session is targeted at COMS 2003 attendees looking to explore commercial aspects and strategies of MST and nanotech in optical communications.
