Highway culverts and drainage structures have the peculiarity of being characterized asrnboth buried pipes in small diameters with no access or worker entry and larger ones withrnthe possibility of manual inspection and repair/renewal. As such, asset managementrnprocedures for culverts are a complex issue. Trenchless technologies are not disruptivernto transportation systems and provide safer construction operations for both workers andrnthe general public and are ideal solutions for culvert renewal projects. If they are used inrnthe appropriate application, they provide extended design life to existing culverts andrndrainage structures that may double or triple the original design life of these assets.rnHowever, each trenchless method has its own capabilities and limitations, and should bernselected based upon existing conditions in order to be effective. This paper presents anrnoverview of ASCE Manual of Practice (MOP) No. 120 entitled “Trenchless Renewal ofrnCulverts and Storm Sewers.” The objective of this MOP is to describe technologies usedrnby engineers and transportation professionals in renewing culverts and drainagernstructures under roads, railroads, airport runways, streets and similar structures.
