Engineering managers often employ Six Sigma to improve the performance of products, services, and internal processes. A Six Sigma program has two main methodologies: Six Sigma Improvement (SSI) and Design for Six Sigma (DFSS). With SSI, improvements are made by following a roadmap known as Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) to eliminate the root causes of performance variation. The purpose of DFSS however, is to create a fundamentally different and more robust solution that exhibits minimal variation from the start. DFSS also has the use of a roadmap at its core. However, there is not one accepted roadmap, but many. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First is to present an overview of different DFSS roadmaps and how they are used. The second purpose is to provide guidance on selecting the best roadmap for a given application, whether it is designing a product, service, or internal process.
