The Karasek Job Strain model has been widely used to examine the relationship between job characteristics and health. The present article describes different versions of the model and evaluates the extent to which they predict occupational health. Overall, the literature shows evidence of the independent effects of job demand, decision latitude and work social support. There is also evidence demonstrating that both control and social support can buffer against the negative effects of job demand. There is little evidence on whether the model can predict differences in objective performance and safety outcomes and it is important to provide information on this in future research.
