In today's extremely competitive Internet economy, characterized by tight labor markets, low inflation, and high-growth expectations, companies must embrace new strategies and tactics to increase business velocity. Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are not enough to execute global plans because they are based on a 20-year-old business model. The e-business phenomenon has introduced a need for speed―an accelerated flow of inventory and information―the likes of which we have never seen before. In the emerging e-business model, response turns critical and companies must become masters of execution. The shift toward a pull-driven distribution model requires new technologies and processes to manage supply chain execution (SCE)―to optimize the actions closest to customers. (See figure 1.)
