This paper presents state-of-the-art technologies for improving the blast resistance of buildings. These techniques have been developed in recent years for protecting, building occupants from various blast load scenarios related to terrorist attacks. An overall physical protection plan for buildings and surrounding facilities may include designing blast-resistant barriers, columns, walls, and windows, or retrofitting existing buildings to enhance their blast resistance. Characteristics of blast-resistant structural components and blast barrier walls will be described in this paper along with enumerating the advantages and disadvantages of particular design concepts. Examples of evaluations of some of these design concepts based on high-fidelity physics based (HFPB) finite element models and blast tests are presented in this paper. Such testing and analyses are key aspects of developing blast-resistant designs.
