摘要

Prevention of accidents and injuries in the workplace are a major concern for industry today due to the costs associated with an accident. These costs associated can be classified as either direct costs or indirect (hidden) costs. Heinrich (1982) estimated that the ratio of indirect to direct costs is 4 to 1. Bird claims the ratio is 5 to 1. Direct costs include insurance costs, medical costs. Indirect costs include losses in manpower, facilities, work-time, and employee morale. Based on the indirect-direct cost ratio identified above, an accident that costing $100 in direct costs can result in a $5 500 loss in final sales. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the current safety management program of a facility in the lodging industry. Additional objectives of this research are to make quality improvements in the services provided to customers, increase productivity, and reduce costs associated with providing a safe work environment for employees.
