Deregulation of the electricity supply industry is causing fundamental change in the way electric utilities operate. To thrive and prosper in this new market, utilities are offering new electrical energy products, new value-added services and new performance-based contracts to their large and valued customers. At the same time, customers are enjoying the freedom to choose the best supplier based on performance or the "value" proposition. With these changes, the exchange of energy goods and services is becoming increasingly difficult to measure and manage. The widespread availability of Internet access and public networks, coupled with the capabilities of a Energy Information System, make it possible to implement an automatic meter reading system over a very wide geographical area using the Internet as the backbone. Energy Information Systems provide the fundamental tools to accurately, reliably and securely meter the performance of suppliers and consumers in terms of their compliance with the contractual agreement to exchange energy products, energy services and money. With appropriate monitoring equipment installed to measure consumption and demand levels with revenue accuracy, concurrent with power quality information, an energy service provider can readily have nationwide access to all the metering data that is required to manage power supply contracts. Easy scalability ensures that additional customers and value-added services may be provided to existing customers with little or no extra expenditure for the communication infrastructure. At the same time, the customer can have easy access to local metering data to verify compliance and track usage patterns, and access to account information over the Worldwide Web.
