1. The main sources of energy harnessed so far for power development in India have been mostly conventional viz., hydro, fossil fuels, hydro carbon and nuclear. The long term planning for power development to meet the ever increasing demand of power in India, cannot be depended on these conventional sources of energy only. Hydro potential development, is getting retarded on account of problems of environment, submergence, deforestation, rehabilitation etc. associated with it. Fossil fuels and hydro carbons have limited reserves apart from environment problems associated with their use. Similarly, nuclear energy source has its own antagonists in the society. It is, therefore, essential to pay greater attention to the harnessing of non-conventional renewable source of energy for power generation which do not vitiate the environment and do not cause other problems associated with the development of conventional energy sources. 2. The vast potential of energy of the seas and oceans which cover about 3/4th of our planet, can make a significant contribution to tide over the energy crisis. Tidal Power, Ocean Thermial Energy Conversion (OTEC), Waves, Oceans and Tidal Currents and Ocean Winds are the various forms of energy from the seas and oceans which are receiving attention at present. However, with the present technology, only tides can be harnessed for large scale development. According to a study conducted by national Oceanographic and Atmosphere Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce about 3,000,000 MW power is continuously dissipated through the motion of tides on the surface of earth. 3. Renewable energy sources have an important role in the Government's Energy Strategy and as we proceed into next century their contribution to the nations energy supply will increase significantly. The Department of Energy is therefore committed to ensuring that the renewable energy technologies realize their full economic potential as soon as possible. The Department is not alone in recognizing the important role of renewable energy sources for this country's future energy supply. An increasing initiative to this programme is shown by increased contribution by the private sector. The emphasis is now for collaborative involvement in the power projects. The Tidal wave energy is one of the most promising resources. 4. India is fortunate to be endowed with a few very attractive potential sites for tidal power developments. The identified economic potential of the tidal power sites is estimated to be around 8000-9000 MW. The central Electricity Authority envisages that installation of tidal energy projects at Gulf of Kutch up to the potential of nearly 2000 MW at an estimated cost of about 6000 crores.
