Abstract: Many remote sensing applications require information gathering in the visible range of the spectrum. The authors examine the main mechanisms which affect the perceived colors of distant objects. In addition to available models of atmospheric transmission and solar radiation effects, intensive use of the CIE system for colorimetric studies is made. Theoretical and experimental results are presented and compared. The adequacy of the CIE methods for remote sensing applications is discussed.!
