A projected railway bridge across the Shchuch'ya (Pike) River is located in the south of the Yamal Peninsula (67°29'N, 67°26'E) in the zone of continuous permafrost about 120-150 m thick in river valleys. Permafrost temperature averages out at -0.2 to -0.3℃ on the right bank formed of high flood plane alluvial deposits. On the left bank formed of Late Pleistocene lake-shore-alluvial deposits, the ground temperature is -3.0℃ at the distance of 78 meters from the river. Ground temperature on the left bank has increased on the average by 0.8℃ for the last 20 years while the air temperature increased by 1.2℃ for the last 50 years in the study area. The ground temperature on the right bank hasn't changed for the last 20 years apparently because of heat-insulating effect of the land fill which is by 2 to 2.5 m thicker on the right bank than on the left one.
