Manufacturing and Characterization of Silica Capillaries for Optical Connectors

The evolution of optical connections causes a request for connectors which must be increasingly simple, inexpensive and easy to manufacture. There are different types of ferrule, for these connectors, which are for the majority made of ceramics (It exists also in metal, in glass and in plastic). We present a new type of capillary for the manufacture of silica ferrules. Most of the study is related to the manufacture and the characterization of the capillary. The production line of the capillary will be presented in a short and diagrammatic way. The geometrical characterization includes the study of the inside and outside diameters of the capillary and its ovalization. These are three significant parameters to ensure a good connection. The mechanical resistance has been measured with bending and fatigue-static tests on capillaries of 3 cm of length. Using the theory of Weibull, we extrapolated the resistance of the ferrules.
