In conclusion we have introduced the concept of a data integrated video sensor. Further we have shown how our PHOCI~(TM) system (the combination a sensor, interface board and application software running on a COTS computer) can be used to implement a free space optical wireless communication system. Using a 7x7 pixel prototype device implemented in 1.5 μm CMOS we have demonstrated the ability to perform both image capture and simultaneous data transmission from 2 optical data sources. Finally, improved prototype designs that have recently been evaluated have shown the ability to detect optical data signals transmitted using a super bright LED at a distance of 30 feet. Based on these successes, we have just submitted our first full scale device (a 128x128 pixel variable threshold design) for fabrication using a deep sub-micron (i.e. TSMC 0.25 μm) CMOS process.
