摘要

Both the behavioral sciences and the traditional engineering/architecture disciplines have failed to conceptualize the office environment in a comprehensive way. This paper proposes a framework for evaluating environmental quality of offices from a systemic epistemology that rests on the idea that the environment is an organic structure; it has parts that are connected to each other by complex interactions in a way that smaller parts of the system can be identified: it has components, processes, products, and outcomes that can be dissected into sub-systems. Thus acknowledging complex interactions between people (employees) and their buildings (offices) under four levels of analysis: (1) the micro-level relates to the individual and his/her setting, (2) the mini-level is for groups and their workspace. (3) the macro-level relates to organization and its building, and (ft) the mega level is concerned with society and the surrounding environment. The product of these four interactions is the "attributes" of place, that define the environment "as experienced" by its users. This paper will elaborate on this proposed framework with interdisciplinary research examples from the fields of architecture, engineering, and environmental psychology. It relies on the general assumption that any environment is composed of "people" and "buildings" on the macro-scale as well as "buildings" and the overall "environment" on the mega-scale. The product of these systems of interaction between people and buildings are thus evaluated through the proposed definition of Total Environmental Quality of place experience. Furthermore, one can place this concept of environmental quality in a larger framework using it as a tool to understand, assess, and evaluate office environments. The hope is to spur future investigations of office environments to adopt this model and investigate the interaction of symbolic, latent, and physical functions of the environment and their affect on office quality and productivity. "I believe that the major justification for the profession of architecture is that it should contribute to the quality of life for people by improving the quality of their physical environment. Without understanding the meaning people give to environments, it is very difficult to know what constitutes "improvement" or "quality." Basil Honikman, Environmental Knowing, 1976.
