Fluorinated analogs of the amino acid methionine have been synthesized and utilized as replacements for this amino acid in a variety of proteins. Application of ~(19)F nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to these fluorinated proteins have increased our knowledge of protein structure and ligand binding events. As well, characterization of these fluorinated proteins using enzyme or bioactivity assays has indicated that little perturbation of the normal activity of the protein occurs upon incorporation of these analogs into proteins.
