This paper describes the effect of refrigerant outgassing from mixtures of lubricant and refrigerant when subject to changes in equilibrium conditions in working refrigeration systems. These effects can vary from almost insignificant foam generation in compressor sumps to rapid failure of compressors due to poor lubrication conditions. This paper presents empirical observations from both laboratory based tests and real life applications. These observations demonstrate that it is possible to alter the severity of the outgassing problem by relatively simple modifications to the basic polyol ester lubricants. However it is clear that consideration to this issue must be given during system design to minimise future risks.
