摘要

Complex three-dimensional stress concentrations, such as weld ends, present problems for most fatigue analysis procedures, the results of which are typically very conservative. This paper is an investigation of a possible explanation for this. It is postulated that the shape of small, non-propagating cracks can affect fatigue life and that this is not accounted for by most assessment methods. A simple correction factor, based on the crack shape factor, is presented. It is shown that this correction improves the accuracy of predictions made for a component feature using the critical distance methods advocated by the authors and also when using the more traditional Peterson and Neuber methods.
