The sensitivity of Cecco probes to geometrical lift-off and tilt effects has been simulated using 3D modelling codes (EDF's TRIFOU and the University of Tokyo's FEM-BEM code), in order to evaluate some of the functional characteristics of these configurations in a tube-testing situation. Both the signal created in the absence of defect (noise evaluation) and the influence of the geometry effect on the signal response have been observed. It is shown how numerical simulation can be used to simplify to a significant extent characterization experiments and parametric studies, as well as to foresee the behavior of the probe in the actual inspection situation.
