The South Coast Air Basin consists of the greater Los Angeles area, Orange County andrnthe non-desert portions of San Bernardino and Riverside Counties in southern California.rnDue to the large and increasing population and the unique meteorology and topography,rnthis area faces serious challenges in the reduction of air pollutants produced and thernimprovement of air quality. The Air Quality Management District (AQMD) hasrnidentified the use of alternative clean fuels in mobile sources as a key air qualityrnattainment strategy. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are true zero-emission vehicles and havernthe potential to eliminate VOC, Nox, CO and toxic emissions from vehicles. The AQMDrnis actively developing a network of hydrogen fueling stations throughout the South CoastrnAir Basin to support the introduction of fuel cell and other hydrogen-fueled vehicles.rnThe developing infrastructure will utilize a variety of hydrogen generation and storagerntechnologies including: on-site generation using electrolyzers or reformers (SMR, ATR,rnATC); bulk hydrogen delivery to existing on-site storage (liquid and compressed); andrndirect connection to our industrial supply pipeline. One of the sites utilizes renewablernenergy (wind turbine power) to generate and compress the hydrogen. Our primary goal isrnto establish a network of sixteen hydrogen fueling stations placed throughout the SouthrnCoast Air Basin that may be utilized by any of the hydrogen fueled vehicles in the basin.rnA secondary goal is to demonstrate the most viable infrastructure technologies andrndesigns to be adopted for future large-scale hydrogen infrastructure implementation.
