Controls for nitrogen oxide compounds (NO, NO_2, nitrates and nitrites) have been receiving increased regulatory attention. Both air emissions and wustewuter discharges of nitrogen oxide compounds are coming under scrutiny and are becoming larger concerns tor iron and steel producers as well as others in the metals industries.rnThis paper traces the sources of these regulatory pressures and discusses reasons why the pressures seem to have increased dramatically over the past decade. The paper illustrates the multimedia impact of increased nitrogen compound emissions by citing the specific example of nitric acid pickling in which both air and wastewater releases require control. The paper compares conventional controls with process modifications (pollution prevention) as approaches to reducing nitrogen compound releases.
